PM Modi Launches India’s First Hydrogen-powered Ferry: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first indigenously developed and manufactured boat running on green hydrogen on Wednesday (28 February). This boat running on green hydrogen emits zero carbon and runs without noise. Its introduction will help in reducing the impact of global warming.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated this hydrogen-powered boat through online medium from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard was also present on this occasion.
India aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2070
Cochin Shipyard, which developed this boat, said that the use of green hydrogen as a marine fuel is central to India’s commitment to a sustainable future. India has set a target of net zero carbon emissions by the year 2070.
‘This fuel cell powered boat is free from emissions and noise’
Cochin Shipyard said in a statement that this inland waterway ship, developed under the Green Boat Initiative, is a pilot project to demonstrate the technology in the maritime sector. The public sector undertaking said, ‘This fuel cell-powered boat is free from emissions and noise. It reduces the impact of global warming by being energy efficient.
‘I am doing all this not for political ideology but for development’
While flagging off India’s first indigenous green hydrogen waterway vessel, PM Modi also said that increased transportation due to the continuous efforts of the central government has brought ‘ease of living’ in Tamil Nadu. Modi said that new projects are an important part of the roadmap of developed India. He said, “Whatever I am saying is not according to any political ideology or my own ideology but for the sake of development.”
